Pauline Carpenter Brown (1931-2022) was a fluent speaker of Chikashshanompa' (the Chickasaw language) from the Shawi' (Raccoon) Clan and had considerable knowledge of Chickasaw history and culture. Born near Fillmore, Oklahoma, she lived within the Chickasaw Nation her entire life.Brown worked as a licensed practical nurse for nearly forty years and retired from the Chickasaw Nation Health System in 1997. As a public health nurse, she had the opportunity to visit the homes of many Chickasaw citizens and occasionally served as clinic interpreter. She received her education from East Central University in Ada, Murray State College in Tishomingo, and Rose State College in Midwest City. Brown served on the Chickasaw Historical Society Board from 1994-2022. She also served on the Chickasaw Language Committee, the Chickasaw Elder’s Council, and the Chickasaw Election Commission.
