Positive Nihilism: My Confrontation with Heidegger

by Hartmut Lange Author and Adrian Nathan West Author

Hartmut Lange, a German intellectual, grappled with Heidegger throughout his life. Positive Nihilism, a result of reading Being and Time, offers aphoristic, poetic, and challenging reflections. This book can be considered a companion to Being and Time. Lange argues that Heidegger’s understanding of Being is nihilistic, drawing support from Kant, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, and Shakespeare’s Othello. He contends that while everyone has the courage to fear death, this courage doesn’t necessarily secure the vital advantages Heidegger claims, such as self-understanding as the mental anticipation of death. Lange argues against Heidegger’s position, citing Tolstoy, Georg Trakl, Herman Bang, and Heinrich von Kleist.
