Touching the Art
by Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore Author
“Art is never just art, it is a history of feeling, a gap between sensations, a safety valve, an escape hatch, a sudden shift in the body, a clipboard full of flowers, a welcome mat flipped over and back, over and back, welcome.”
Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore is a queer activist and artist, who writes of her relationship to art, her family, and the world around her. Sycamore's grandmother was one of her biggest influences and helped shape her artistic voice, but then later dismissed her as Sycamore came into her own queer voice as an artist. The reader joins Sycamore as she sifts through her grandmother's art, and reflects on the creative drive and her place in the artistic world.
