Ghostland: In Search of a Haunted Country

This book presents a narrative that’s simultaneously an exploration of what haunts writers and other artists, as well as a personal look at what haunts the author, Edward Parnell, himself. It takes into account the themes of grief, memory, longing, and the power of stories and nature to confront these. The book starts off with the author in his thirties, trapped in a cycle of familial grief, often turning to the ghost stories in his bookshelf for comfort — those that often comforted and fascinated him in his youth, this time finding comfort in the messages inside that talk about life after death. Through the book, Parnell searches the sequestered, haunted places in the British Isles, as well as the ghostly folklore linked to them that have popularized by spooky media through the years. He explores paranormal media and dives into these archetypes in many dimensions.
