The Puerto Rican War: Burning the Draft Cards

On October 30, 1950, many cities in Puerto Rico rose up to revolt against the island's government, including an uprising in the town of Jayuya, led by Blanca Canales, who gave a speech in the town square declaring PR a free Republic and inviting residents to burn their draft cards as an act of resistance against US sovereignty. The town was attacked by the PR National Guard, outfitted and backed by the US, but locals held off the attack for three days.
