Slenderman: Online Obsession, Mental Illness, and the Violent Crime of Two Midwestern Girls
by Kathleen Hale Author
This book recounts the first full account of the Slenderman stabbing, a true crime narrative of mental illness, the American judicial system, adolescence, and the internet.
On May 31, 2014, in Wisconsin, twelve-year-old girls Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier attempted to stab their classmate under the influence of the internet’ game character “Slenderman.” Both shared a love of geeky TV shows, and their discovery of Creepypasta stories could have been a brief phase. Morgan had early-onset childhood schizophrenia and believed she had seen Slenderman before. To stop him from killing her family, she planned to sacrifice her best friend, Payton “Bella” Leutner. Bella survived, but was traumatized. Morgan and Anissa were jailed and prosecuted as adults. As Morgan’s mental illness worsened after being denied antipsychotics, her life became surreal.
