Our Red Book: Intimate Histories of Periods, Growing & Changing

by Rachel Kauder Nalebuff Author

This book collects essays, oral histories, and artworks about menstruation across life stages. Inspired by a harrowing coming-of-age story, Rachel Kauder Nalebuff began gathering family stories about menstruation. This project expanded to include stories from strangers, including writers, experts, community leaders, activists, young people, and others.

This book weaves together powerful voices from diverse backgrounds, including teenagers, midwives, Indigenous scholars, Olympic athletes, incarcerated writers, disoriented fathers, elected leaders, friends transitioning genders, grandmothers, and lovers. Over twenty years, the collection offers a people’s history of menstruation, reflecting shifting relationships to family, culture, gender, aging, and liberation.
