Assassin in Utopia: The True Story of a Nineteenth-Century Sex Cult & a President's Murder.

by Susan Wels Author

This true-crime account explores a odd chapter of American history. The narrative will take the reader to upstate New York in a free-love community that lead to the assassination of a US president. A proposed new Eden attracted thousands by train and carriage to acres of woodland, lush orchards, fields of cattle and sheep flocks, and picturesque mills. In 1848, there were women who weren’t berated for short hair and short skirts -- working together to upkeep the community alongside men. This was the Oneida Community, where open marriage and free love was practiced. By the end of it's lifespan, one-time member Charles Julius Guitar would assassinate the president James Garfield. This story weaves narratives of prominent members of this community and connects the dots between the founder of the Oneida Community, the founder of the New Yorker, Garfield, his assassin, and others.
