You Know, Sex: Bodies, Gender, Puberty, and Other Things
by Cory Silverberg Author and Fiona Smyth Author
This a modern guide to sexual education, with a designated audience ages 10 to 14, US grade 5 through 9. This guide intends to be more comprehensive than other guides of its kind that precede it — indenting for it to be accessible all kinds of kids and teens, from all sorts of families. It covers the “big three” topics of puberty (hormones, reproduction, and development) and goes beyond to include discussions on power, pleasure, and being a decent person. It includes representations of people that are diverse including experiences focused around race, cross-disability, ethnicity, and gender. This focuses on young people’s experiences of self-development and self-discovery, bringing in chapters on autonomy, disclosure and stigmas, what entails harassment, pornography, trauma, masturbation, consent — boundaries and safety, that include perspectives of trans, intersex, and gender diverse individuals. Rightfully focusing its audience as the children themselves, this is an excellent resource for them but intended to be of great value to parents and guardians of children who are undergoing important life events themselves.
