by C. Pierce Salguero Author
This study explores how Indian medical knowledge, particularly Āyurveda, was received and adapted in medieval China through Buddhist texts and translations. The transmission of Buddhism from India to China significantly impacted various aspects of Chinese life, including medicine. By analyzing Chinese Buddhist writings, the study examines how Indian medical ideas were understood, modified, and communicated to Chinese audiences. It highlights the creativity of individual Chinese writers as they integrated these foreign teachings with local medical traditions, providing a dynamic view of the evolving medical landscape in medieval China. The research combines religious studies, translation studies, and the history of medicine to uncover the influence of Buddhist medical knowledge on Chinese healing practices.
