Mars Owners' Workshop Manual: From 4.5 billion years ago to the present

by David M Harland Author

This offers a detailed exploration of the evolution of our understanding of Mars. It begins with a Renaissance astronomer discovering the laws of planetary motion, followed by the advent of telescopes, which allowed for more detailed mapping of the planet's surface. In the late 19th century, Percival Lowell claimed that Mars was criss-crossed by canals created by intelligent beings to transport water from polar ice caps to equatorial areas. Although rejected by astronomers, his vision inspired science fiction. By the mid-20th century, the consensus was that large parts of Mars hosted hardy vegetation. To confirm this, space vehicles were sent to Mars, initially on flyby missions, then orbiting the planet, and more recently landing on it.
