A Song for the Unsung: Bayard Rustin, the Man Behind the 1963 March on Washington
by Carole Boston Weatherford Author, Rob Sanders Author and Byron McCray Illustrator
This is a picture book biography of Bayard Rustin, the man behind the 1963 March on Washington. On August 28, 1963, a quarter of a million activists marched for jobs and freedom in Washington, D.C. They raised their voices for racial and economic justice for Black Americans. Every movement has unsung heroes who work without praise. Bayard Rustin was one of these heroes. He introduced Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to peaceful protest, orchestrated the March on Washington, and composed the program that placed Dr. King at the end of the “I Have a Dream” speech.
This quiet, gay, African American man will be celebrated for the first time in a picture book, for children ages 6 to 10. This book honors one of the men who made the historic March on Washington happen.
