Lost in the Valley of Death: A Story of Obsession and Danger in the Himalayas
by Harley Rustad Author
In this biography, we learn about the life of Justin Alexander Shetler, briefly learning about his travels in search of meaningful experiences. His Instagram posts of this journey produced a substantial following of people, where he gave narrative to his travels. By 2016 he reaches the Parvati Valley, in a remote and rugged corner of the Indian Himalayas, where he spends a couple of weeks studying under the guidance of a sadhu — an Indian holy man. He lives and meditates inside a cave where he and the holy man eventually leave and set off to a journey to encounter a holy lake. A journey that our protagonist does not return from. This story, chronicled by writer Harley Rustad, explores this man’s search for fulfillment, places where this resonates, and evokes the reminder that finding fulfillment — for most people on earth — isn’t without risk.
