From Head Shops to Whole Foods: The Rise & Fall of Activist Entrepreneurs

by Joshua C. Davis Author

This book explores a different side to entrepreneurship and local businesses, and the unfamiliar intersectional roles these once played more heavily in activism and social justice actions in the past. The author will dive into the roots of these places, looking back to the 60s and 7-s when diverse businesses such as headshops, bookstores, organic grocers created and promoted alternative, successful and more fair business models to their local communities and provided alternatives to corporate options. In a new lens to look at activist movements during this time, this book will especially dive into a perspective that suggests that these places were keystone actors in movements, as well as go into those businesses today — and how there are many appropriating the aesthetic but not fully the values.
