Cuba Libre!: Che, Fidel, and the Improbable Revolution That Changed World History

by Tony Perrottet Author

This book presents the surprising story of Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, and the ragtag group of rebels who followed them. The revolution, led by charismatic figures Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, overthrew the US-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista. Historian and journalist Tony Perrottet unravels the human drama behind this improbable revolution: a group of self-taught revolutionaries, including college students and extraordinary women, that defeated 40,000 professional soldiers.

This book reveals fascinating details: how Fidel’s lover Celia Sánchez organized the male guerrillas, the role of American volunteers, and guerrilla-style cooking. It’s an absorbing look back at a liberation movement that captivated the world with its drama, bravery, tragedy, and comedy, setting the stage for Cold War tensions that pushed the world to the brink of nuclear war.
