Animal One Thousand Miles Long: Seven Lengths of Vermont and Other Adventures

by Leath Tonino Author

This book is Leath Tonino’s debut collection of essays that celebrates Vermont’s vast and intricate landscape. Growing up near Lake Champlain, Tonino’s career as a nature and travel writer has taken him across the country, but he always returns to his home state. He explores various parts of Vermont, creating a prose map of its body to celebrate its possibilities rather than understand it definitively.

The collection’s overarching theme is the interconnectedness of geography, natural history, human experience, local traditions, seasons, and unique outings. Tonino argues that these elements can open us to a place and, in turn, make us feel more connected to it. He examines the theme of “huge-small” Vermont, but his message is intended to be universal.
