The ways humans relate, or separate, themselves from nature is a dynamic that is nuanced and holds a long history. Morley begins by citing views of various indigenous groups that held that the natural world and its respective ecosystems were something people couldn't be separated from -- then contrasting them with the colonial views to come, that would introduce a harsh dualism viewing humans as something outside or above the ecosystems they exist in and influence. With this perspective in mind, Morley explains, or rather accounts to us, the many ways in which nature has an intelligence and adaptability, just as people do, to drive the point that all life on this planet is symbiotic and evolving, evoking sentiment rooted strongly in spirituality.
