In Defense of Looting: A Riotous History of Uncivil Action
by Vicky Osterweil Author
This book takes a critical look at looting, as well as the biases and many divergent points of view that define what it means. The author takes the axial opinion that looting is one of the most powerful tools of civilians to fight white supremacy — citing the history of liberation actions that have involved looting. From slave revolts in the past to climate change and advocating for black lives in the 21st century, the author makes a case that looting sends a clear and pragmatic message of the irony of the society; It sends messages that are brazen enough to be take seriously in a police society made to defend the property of the rich and for the rich to accumulate wealth. The author argues that it sends a violent yet direct blow to status quos that cry out for change on societal levels and can be a spare for initial revolutionary activism and calls for restructuring our worlds.
