The Modern School Movement: Anarchism and Education in the U.S.
by Paul Avrich Author
Did you know about the anarchist alternative school system that ran in the US between 1910 and 1960? There were more than 20 schools, where students were able to learn independently and freely, rather than in the punitive and overly structured traditional classroom system. The big idea was that those kids would grow up to be free-thinking, cooperative, problem solvers, and leaders. Participants included Emma Goldman, Margaret Sanger, Alexander Berkman, and Man Ray. This book is based on interviews with students and teachers who worked in the system and shows the potential for alternative education like unschooling.
